How to Post a Tiny Desk AI Video: Captions, Sound and AI Labels

By Tiny Desk AI Editorial Team · Published: · Last updated:

Before posting a Tiny Desk AI video, check the downloaded file, the consent of everyone shown, the sound you are using and the receiving platform's disclosure rules. A finished export does not automatically clear the music or make the synthetic performance authentic. The caption should explain the joke without implying that the people actually performed at NPR. This checklist covers preparation for TikTok, Reels and Shorts. It does not promise platform reach, supply a music license or claim that all three services use identical posting controls.

Review the actual download

Watch the exported file from beginning to end before opening a social app. Inspect the cast, camera cuts, visible artifacts and sound. If it does not play correctly locally, fix that before diagnosing the upload.

Use these checks:

  • Every intended person appears in the correct role.
  • Everyone shown agreed to this synthetic use and the intended audience.
  • The main reaction remains visible after any crop.
  • Captions do not cover the face or the relevant instrument.
  • The opening and ending do not cut unexpectedly.
  • The exported sound is the sound you intended to publish.

Keep the original export as a separate file before making a platform-specific crop or caption version. If a problem starts before posting, use the troubleshooting guide.

Make the caption carry the context

The familiar performance does not explain your group's joke by itself. Name the situation in a short line and clearly frame the clip as an AI parody.

These are original caption ideas, not examples of measured high-performing posts:

SituationCaption idea
Fantasy league“An AI concert from the people who said this was their year.”
Group holiday“Our planning committee, minutes after missing the booking.”
Office lunch“An AI performance by the team that picked the restaurant.”
Birthday“The birthday band we could assemble without a rehearsal.”
Weekend predictions“We got every result wrong. The confidence was outstanding.”

Choose a joke everyone pictured is comfortable with. Avoid presenting a private person's synthetic behavior as a real embarrassing event or an actual endorsement.

Handle TikTok's AI label

TikTok requires creators to label realistic AI-generated images, audio and video. Its AI-content guidance also explains creator-applied labels and automatic labels.

Use the platform's current posting controls rather than relying solely on a hashtag. A caption can add context, but follow the disclosure setting and policy instructions applicable to your post.

An AI label is not permission to use a person's likeness. It is also not an exception to other content rules. Review the cast and the context even when the synthetic nature seems obvious to your friends.

Check music separately

Listen to the final file instead of assuming it contains the original concert audio. “Outstanding” in a title can refer to the meme, the song or a performance style; those are not the same recording.

If your TikTok post promotes a brand, product or service, TikTok recommends its Commercial Music Library. Its general music licenses do not cover commercial use of music outside that library. Other music requires the relevant permissions.

Adding sound inside one app does not establish rights to export that audio to another app. Recheck the rules for the destination and your particular use, especially for paid ads, sponsorships and product promotion.

Prepare Reels and Shorts independently

For Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, inspect the current in-app disclosure and sound controls before publishing. Do not assume that TikTok's button names, music availability or settings apply to them.

Preview the upload in each destination. Check that interface elements do not cover the joke, that the crop is acceptable and that any text remains readable. Keep a version without burned-in platform branding so the file can be reviewed independently.

If one platform flags the upload, follow that platform's notice. An unchanged copy succeeding elsewhere does not establish that the flag was wrong or that rights are cleared everywhere.

Credit the source accurately

If explaining the meme, identify the source as Charlie Wilson's NPR Tiny Desk performance. Link to the official concert rather than calling your synthetic video an official Tiny Desk appearance.

For the backstory, share the trend explainer. Credit supplies context; it does not replace permission or remove the need for an AI disclosure.

Still need to make the video?

Open Tiny Desk AI and use yourself or adults who agree to appear. The current form has one required lead and four optional supporting positions, with no minors, celebrities or public figures allowed.

Use the step-by-step tutorial, then return to this checklist with the finished download. Publish only after the cast, sound, context and platform requirements have all been reviewed.
